Google OS
July 8th, 2009

Is anyone surprised? This has been talked about for years now, but finally Google anounced its own Operating System. Suprisingly, yet not, the system will not be entirely based on Linux, as was speculated before, but on Chrome, further blurring the line between PC Operating System and the web.

The fact that the new OS is primarily targetted to netbooks is a major threat to Microsoft. Netbooks are much cheaper than good old PCs, and having an expensive OS, such as Windows 7, is just not feasable. This gives Google an edge in the fast rising netbook market, and provides an excellent growth potential.

I am curious to see the battle of the giants, as Google battles Microsoft off its throne. I’m also very curious to work with the new system, and see what it can do. Regardless, this is a start of a new era in operating systems.

You’ve probably seen Microsoft’s response to Apple’s “I’m a Mac, and I’m a PC commercial”. Well, from a marketing perspective, the campaign is a disaster. Any person familiar with marketing (and I only have a few undergrad courses behind my belt) will tell you that an ad is supposed to build a brand. In this case there are a few choices: Microsoft, Windows, Vista, Windows Live, etc. Yet MS chose to advertise a generic PC. At the end of an ad there is usually a small MS logo and the name Windows, but that’s not what the viewer takes away from the ad.

Apple has already benefited from this campaign by launching hilarious response to the ad, mocking Microsoft’s decision to put more money into advertising, rather than fixing Vista’s problems. And, in today’s economy, Linux is benefiting from the ads, since its a free alternative operating system, which many geeks will tell you is much better than Windows.

MS Priorities
July 16th, 2008

“We broke a lot of things. We know that, and we know it caused you a lot of pain.”

That’s what Brad Brooks said about Windows Vista on the Worldwide Partner Conference.

So what’s Microsoft’s plan? They’re launching a new advertising campaign! It even includes a TV response ad to Apple’s famous “I’m a Mac, and I’m a PC” ad. Way to go!

This really shows where Microsoft’s priorities are. They’re not going to make a good operating system, one that will advertise itself. They’re going to make the piece of sh*t that is Vista look good by a massive marketing campaign.

MS Madness
July 10th, 2008

Checking my Windows Updates this week, I found a patch, titled “Update to Windows Vista (KB955020)”. After my recent upgrade problems I check every update offered by Microsoft. Well, according to this article, the update adds the words, such as “Friendster,” “Klum,” “Nazr,” “Obama,” and “Racicot” to the dictionary to prevent applications from underlining the words as spelling mistakes. So far, so good – “Barak Obama” is a phrase used frequently these days, and you don’t want to be distracted by the red squiggly line.

Here is where this gets interesting. The update is 56.3 Mb big. Huh? That’s about 1,000,000 times larger than the weight of the words added to the dictionary!
